Danang industry eyes the potential of Hong Kong market in 2018, and aim to boost further actions for a sustainable development besides its recent strong markets of China and Korea.

Statistics by the Tourism Department showed that, for the first 6 months of 2018, 7,193 Hong Kong visitors arrived to Danang and witnessed a jump from 11,046 visitors in 2016 to 14,903 visitors in 2017. It is reported to increase 35% last year.

Mr. Johnny Li, Managing Director Gateway Group Limited in Hong Kong opined: "Danang has recently emerged as an attractive destination for foreign visitors. The recent Danang tourism presentation has helped Hong Kong travel agencies gain an in-depth look into luxurious accommodation services as well as the developing MICE market in Danang."

Located along sections of Mai Hac De and Ly Nam De streets in Da Nang's Son Tra District, the Son Tra Night Market was officially opened to the public on Sunday evening. It daily operates from 6.00pm until midnight, and admission is free for all visitors.

The new night market features a total of 152 stalls selling food and drinks, souvenirs, fashionable clothes, bags, footwear, specialties, dried seafood, books, pictures and other commodities.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, the Chairwoman of the Son Tra District People's Committee, Mrs Tran Thi Thanh Tam, remarked that the purpose of the Son Tra Night Market was to to create a combined tourist and shopping space in the inner city, allowing visitors to comfortably shop, enjoy entertainment services and explore local cultural characteristics. This would help the city deal with the current lack of its own special tourism products.

Ariyana Convention Centre Danang, managed by the long-established Furama Resort Danang has welcomed more than 1,500 delegates from 183 member countries to attend The Sixth Global Environment Facility (GEF) Assembly and Associated Meetings, taking place from June 23rd  – 29th 2018.

The GEF Assembly, set up to help tackle pressing environmental problems, is held every four years. It brings together environment ministers and other senior officials from its 183 member countries, along with heads of UN agencies, regional development backs, civil society organisations and business leaders to share ideas, solutions and action needed to protect the global environment.

The GEF Assembly and Associated Meetings were preceded by The Constituency Meeting and Scientific and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) Meeting on June 23rd.  The 54th GEF Council Meeting took place on June 24th - 26th and the 24th Least Developed Countries Fund/Special Climate Change Fund Council Meeting and a Civil Society Forum on June 26th. The opening plenary sessions on June 27th  covered the state of the global environment, the ambition needed to help transform the systems that support how people live, eat, move; how we produce and consume; and how the implementation of GEF-7 can contribute to the necessary systems change. Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended and delivered opening speech, stating that Vietnam is willing to accompany with the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in boosting sustainable development for the current and future generations.

Mr. Matthias Wiesmann, General Manager of Furama Resort Danang, shared that the experience garnered from hosting the APEC 2017 Summit helped his team to prepare for the 6th GEF Assembly and Associated Meetings over the course of several months.

Wiesmann added that the Ariyana Convention Centre has also implemented green activities in light of the meeting. For instance, the centre has opted for locally-sourced meals, provides water stations instead of bottled water, and minimises the energy and its carbon footprint emission.

By attending the 6th GEF Assembly, Vietnam delivered the message and promoted to the international community with strong determination, effort and commitment of Vietnam on sustainable development, especially in the implementation of Vietnam's international commitments on protecting the environment. In addition, this was also an opportunity for Vietnam to strengthen, foster cooperation, seek opportunities to receive financial support, technology, introduce and promote tourism, culture, landscapes and Vietnamese people.

Vietnam was one of the earliest members of the GEF, joining on December 5, 1994.
