Digital Transformation: The New Revolution in the Tourism Industry Over the Past Three Years

In the past three years, digital transformation has become one of the main driving forces behind the development of Da Nang’s tourism industry. Advanced technological solutions, particularly artificial intelligence (AI), are gradually transforming how tourism businesses operate—from enhancing customer experiences to optimizing management and operational processes.

According to the digital transformation architecture model in tourism proposed at the 2021 Tourism Conference and the “Smart Tourism Ecosystem” (Vietnam National Authority of Tourism, October 2024), tourism businesses and authorities in Da Nang are implementing technology applications to optimize customer management. These include the use of websites, CRM (Customer Relationship Management) systems, and service-supporting software to better manage tourists’ journeys, provide accurate and timely information, and enhance service integration across the industry.

To date, AI continues to affirm its role as a powerful driver for the flagship tourism sector. According to a report by We Market Research, the AI market in the hospitality industry was valued at USD 90 million in 2022 and is projected to reach USD 8.12 billion by 2033, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 60% during the forecast period.

At the seminar “Artificial Intelligence – A New Driver for Da Nang’s Development,” experts proposed a strategy for building a robust data platform, combining technology and human factors to enhance customer experience and optimize the application of AI in tourism—positioning Da Nang as a regional smart tourism hub.

“To build a smart tourism model in Da Nang, hotels and resorts must implement AI in three advanced phases: from building AI-based automation platforms, enhancing customer experience through virtual assistants, to deploying specialized AI for proactive operations and customer care. AI is not merely a short-term technology but a long-term strategy that plays a key role in the sustainable development of the tourism industry. To effectively implement this strategy, there must be a focus on training high-quality human resources, optimizing operational processes, and scientifically collecting data to enhance both experience and service quality. Furthermore, the three-phase AI application—from automation foundation, enhanced customer interaction, to specialized AI for service optimization—is essential to achieve long-term tourism breakthroughs.

On April 27th, 2025, the first direct flight from Tashkent (Uzbekistan) successfully landed at Danang International Airport, bringing over 180 passengers to Vietnam’s vibrant coastal city. A New Air Route – Opening the Door to Central Asia

Operated in collaboration with Prestige DMC Vietnam, Red Island Company, Centrium-Air Airways, and Prestige Travel Uzbekistan, the Tashkent-Danang charter route will run weekly from April 27 to October 31, 2025. The frequency is expected to increase to two flights per week starting in June 2025.

This development is part of a broader strategy to expand Vietnam’s international tourism markets, particularly from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), including Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan. With this route, the total number of weekly flights from the CIS to Danang now reaches 11.

This year’s Reunification Day (April 30) and International Labor Day (May 1) holiday period once again underscored the compelling allure of Da Nang city, as tens of thousands of domestic and international tourists selected it as their destination for leisure and exploration. A vibrant festive atmosphere permeated the renowned tourist areas and attractions, with many reporting maximum operational capacity.

Sun World Ba Na Hills reaffirmed its position as one of Da Nang’s premier tourist hotspots. From the early morning of May 1st, queues of visitors formed, patiently awaiting the modern cable car experience and the chance to admire the impressive scenery, often likened to a “miniature Europe” nestled within the city. Mr. Nguyen Van Hien, Head of the Management Board of Ngu Hanh Son (Marble Mountains), shared that on May 1st alone, the site anticipated receiving over 7,200 visitors. The total estimated number of visitors for the entire holiday period at this location was an impressive figure, expected to exceed 32,000. Similarly, the Da Nang Mikazuki resort and entertainment complex projected serving around 18,000 guests over the five holiday days, with average room occupancy hitting 99% and reaching the 100% threshold during the peak days from April 30th to May 2nd.

To further enrich the experience for residents and tourists alike, the city of Da Nang proactively organized a diverse and appealing series of cultural and artistic events throughout the holiday break.

According to information from the Da Nang Department of Tourism, this year’s holiday period (lasting from April 27th to May 1st) was forecasted to see significant growth in visitor numbers compared to the same period in 2024. Data from Da Nang International Airport indicated a strong surge in flight activity, with approximately 692 arriving and departing flights, marking a 16% increase from the previous year, averaging 138 flights daily.

Maritime travel also contributed to the vibrant tourism picture, as Da Nang Port welcomed an international cruise ship docking at Tien Sa Port, carrying around 2,000 multinational passengers. Concurrently, the number of visitors choosing to travel to Da Nang by rail during the holiday was estimated at over 13,200.

The bustling activity at various destinations, combined with impressive statistics, once again confirms Da Nang’s position and strong appeal on Vietnam’s tourism map. It stands as a testament to the city’s meticulous preparation and continuous efforts in delivering high-quality and memorable travel experiences.
